Match Report: Yorkshire Post: 2nd January 1920:
BARNSLEY RESERVES V LEEDS UNITED
Played at Barnsley, before 1, 000 spectators. In the early stages Barnsley, who made several changes, were seen to advantage, and
Witham netted after 15 minutes. Downing the Barnsley custodian, was rather fortunate in preventing Naylor from scoring. Birtles, the old
Barnsley player, initiated many raids on the Barnsley goal , but the finishing of the Leeds forwards left much to be deseired. Leeds later had
more of the play, but did not press home their advantage, Naylor missing an absolute open goal. Just before the interval C. Matthews placed
Barnsley further ahead.
Birtles reduced Barnsley's lead early in the second half. Barnsley's forwards showed up well, but Rounds brought off some fine clearances.
Naylor missed another scoring chance and Downing did good work in the Barnsley goal. Barnsley were the superior lot, and more clever in
combination. Birtles played a good game, and Mason was speedy at outside right. The Leeds defence was rather streaky, bur Rounds was
very safe.
